Greater Albany Public Schools Board Policy on Controversial Topics

In my opinion, the decision of the Greater Albany Public Schools Board to implement a policy that requires advance notifications to parents regarding the introduction of “controversial” curricular topics can be seen as a form of political helicopter parenting. As a former K-12 educator, I believe that K-12 education should provide opportunities for children to explore new ideas that go beyond what they encounter at home. Restricting parents’ ability to manage lesson plans can limit the scope of our children’s education and hinder their growth, the expansion of knowledge, and their overall learning experience.
