Today marks a solemn occasion for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department as they gather to remember Marion County Deputy Matthew Blansett. It has been one year since the tragic accident that took Deputy Blansett’s life and that of State Trooper Lee Russell.
On August 23, 2022, Deputy Blansett and Trooper Russell were aboard a THP helicopter conducting an aerial search for marijuana plants. However, their mission quickly changed as they were called to assist in the search for a missing person.
At approximately 3:00 pm, tragedy struck as their helicopter collided with a power line on I-24, crashing into a wooded area near the Whiteside community on Aetna Mountain. Both Deputy Blansett and Trooper Russell lost their lives in the accident.
To honor Deputy Blansett’s memory and mark the one-year anniversary of his death, the Marion County Sheriff’s Department is holding a memorial service. The memorial will be held at 2:30 pm in front of the Marion County Justice Center.
This memorial service serves as a reminder of the risks and sacrifices that law enforcement officers face each day in the line of duty. It is an opportunity for the community to come together to show support for the families of Deputy Blansett and Trooper Russell and to express gratitude for their service.
Deputy Matthew Blansett will always be remembered for his dedication, bravery, and commitment to keeping his community safe. Though he may be gone, his memory lives on through the legacy he leaves behind. Today, we pay our respects and honor his sacrifice.
