US Army Awards Contract to Airbus to Modernize Army National Guard Mission Equipment

The US Army has recently awarded Airbus a $27.8 million contract to modernize its Army National Guard security and support battalion mission equipment package (MEP). This strategic move aims to enhance national security by integrating advanced technology into the UH-72A Lakota helicopters.

The upgraded MEP will provide the UH-72A Lakota helicopters with advanced features to enhance their operational capabilities. This includes an advanced moving map, improved digital interfaces, new monitors, an airborne mission management system, and other system improvements. These upgrades will enable the helicopters to effectively execute day and night operations, enhancing their value as an ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) asset for the National Guard.

The UH-72A Lakota helicopters equipped with the upgraded MEP will support a range of missions, including domestic operations, counter-drug initiatives, and border security efforts. These missions are crucial for safeguarding the nation.

Under the contract, Airbus will retrofit up to 50 security and support battalion aircraft deployed across the United States. The retrofitting process will take place at Airbus’ helicopter production facility in Columbus, Mississippi. Airbus has a long history of delivering UH-72A and UH-72B Lakota helicopters to the US Army since 2006.

This contract further solidifies Airbus’ position as a major player in the military rotorcraft market. The company’s contracts for the US Army National Guard’s UH-72B procurement have positioned Airbus as the fourth shareholder in the region, according to GlobalData’s “The Global Military Rotorcraft Market 2023-2033” report.

The execution of this contract falls under the jurisdiction of Airbus US Space & Defense, a division of Airbus. This strategic partnership between the US Army and Airbus will strengthen national security and support the missions of the Army National Guard.
